Justin, 2025
“Justin” is an original watercolor painting that is 8x10 inches with a one inch white border on paper.
The painting depicts my step-son Justin who is in his mid-twenties. He immigrated to America from the Netherlands and lives in Utah now. His image was captured in stark light coming from above his head. The blue background , random pencil strokes and highlighted features are suggestive of Justin’s personality.
The subject is off centered to the upper left leaving the foreground to the right airy and open. This composition structure is used in many of my portraits. I want the subject to be open and free with room to expand their presence if the viewer so chooses.
