Belfry of St. Nicholas, 2025
Original watercolor painting- 8x10 inches with a one inch white border around the image
This is a painting of the Saint Nicholas Church in Prague, Czech Republic that I while visiting the city in 2025. The church in Mala Strana (lesser town) was built by the Jesuit Order in 1704. The building is an example of the High Baroque architecture style. Mozart performed concerts here on the churches organ. The interior frescoes are by John Lukas Kracker. Later in history it was covered to a parish church after the suppression of the Jesuits in 1773. During the Napoleonic wars the church was used a field hospital.
The painting is representative of my landscapes in its use of impressionistic technique of analyzing light as it moves through the atmosphere and reflects off of objects. The narrow space depicted creates an intimate atmosphere where you can feel the history of Prague reflecting on the shimmering stucco buildings.
This street view is looking north to the belfry of St. Nicholas in the background. The church has a majestic presence as it towers over the buildings in the neighborhood. The turquoise of the cathedrals roof compliments the the warm tones of the roofing below it. Earthy tones in the architecture are in stark contrast to the electric red of the cable car passing by.
The figures in the composition are erratic and not related to one another signifying the busy, multi-national activity of the city street. The colors in the painting are muted from the overcast skies and again highlighting the streetcar that had just appeared from around the corner. The triangular composition between the belfry, train and pedestrians balance the image and merges the people with their surroundings.
