First Run, 2025
Original watercolor painting on paper, 8x10 inches with a one inch border around the image.
This watercolor painting was commissioned by a client to depict a father and daughter on a ski lift together. I decided to accent the subject with a sunrise backlighting swirling snow into the composition.
Having grown up in Utah and I have experienced many frigid mornings in awe of a beautiful sunrise, particularly during a snowstorm. The time that I have spent in the mountains, particularly in adverse conditions, has revealed the true beauty of this world.
The subject of the painting is of two snowboarders silhouetted against the sun. This is in contrast to the ski lift tower in the foreground that draws the eye towards the subject. My color scheme used cool colors to emphasize the cold temperature of the enviroment the subdued hues used in the palette replicate the diffusion of light through the falling snowflakes. A sense of distance is also achieved using this same principle of snowflakes diffusing light and blurring objects in the distance.
Overall this painting was a departure from my usual brush stroke strategy as I have been experimenting with a pointillism technique also seen in Respite 2025 and Landscape Arch, 2025.
