Waffle Hut, 2025

Original 8x10 inch watercolor painting on paper with a one inch border around the image.

This is a watercolor painting of a coffee cup resting on a table in the Waffle House in Atlanta Georgia. Waffle House is a southern institution that has been in business since 1955 and is known for its breakfast anytime, late night, rough crowds and the fact that these diners stay open during Hurricanes. I was attending a conference there and was enjoying breakfast with my colleagues when the light reflecting off the table really accentuated the fluorescent colors in that diner.

The focal point of the painting would be the branded coffee cup that has a swirling indication of cream follows the mugs handle out into the background. The chaotic reflection of the table is stabilized by the red seat cushions and the coffee mug itself. The color scheme illuminates the diner denoting a mood of frivolity intertwined within an unsettling environment. The stark use of black under the pastel colors again reflects this thought. This was the first painting that I started utilizing a pointillism technique to create texture and fuse colors. Though this piece was experimental in means, the end product captured the sight, smell and feel of the “waffle Hut”
