Madam X, 2025
8x10 inches with a one inch white border
Giclee Print on watercolor paper
This print of an original painting was created with acrylic paint on hot press illustration board. The giclee prints sold here are 11x14 inches with a 1 inch border surrounding the 9x12 inch image. Photographic references were used.
The painting is reminiscent of John Singer Sargent's 1884 oil painting of the same name. Sargents painting when displayed in France was met with distaste, and described as vulgar, over sexualized, and criticized for the stark contrast of the subject to her background. My rendering of Madame X, certainly carries the same tones, but in a less formal pose and muted green hues that soften her presence. My impression of Madame X celebrates her strong femine presence after a very visible exhibition in the privacy of her dressing room where she reveals her vulnerability away from the gawking eyes of the public.
